Decorative Plaster & Natural Wall Finishes in Chicago

Walls with depth, movement, and character
Decorative plaster creates something ordinary paint can’t: a surface that changes with the light and shows the hand of the person who applied it. The subtle variation isn’t a flaw—it’s what gives the finish warmth, depth, and life.
A Little Paint installs handcrafted wall finishes for Chicago homes and interiors, including Roman Clay, Venetian plaster, limewash, and other specialty finishes.
A finish designed for your space
Every decorative finish responds differently to color, lighting, wall condition, and application technique. Before work begins, we create samples so you can see the actual color and movement in your space—not just select something from a small swatch.
We’ll help determine the right finish based on the look you want, the room’s use, and the existing surface.
Available finishes
Roman Clay
A soft, matte finish with subtle movement and a natural stone-like appearance. Roman Clay works especially well in living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms, ceilings, and other spaces where you want quiet texture without a polished shine.
Venetian Plaster
A smoother, more refined plaster finish that can range from softly burnished to highly polished. Its layered depth can create the appearance of limestone, marble, or aged plaster.
Limewash
A mineral-based finish with cloudy color variation and an old-world appearance. Limewash is ideal when you want walls that feel relaxed, weathered, and architectural.
Custom Decorative Finishes
Colors, sheen, texture, and movement can be adjusted to suit the room. We can also develop sample finishes for a specific design concept or visual reference.
Our process
- Consultation — We discuss the space, finish, color, and overall direction.
- Sample development — Physical samples are created for review and approval.
- Surface preparation — Walls are repaired and properly primed for the selected finish.
- Hand application — The finish is built in multiple layers using the appropriate trowels, brushes, and techniques.
- Final detailing — We inspect the surface, complete touch-ups, and apply a protective finish when appropriate.
Preparation matters
Decorative plaster doesn’t hide poor wall preparation. In many cases, it emphasizes it. Cracks, damaged plaster, uneven drywall, and heavy texture may need to be repaired or leveled before the decorative finish is applied.
Because we also specialize in plaster and drywall repair, the preparation and finish can be handled as one complete project.
What to expect
Decorative plaster is intentionally handmade. Variations in tone, texture, and trowel movement are part of the finished appearance. No two walls—or even two sections of the same wall—will look exactly alike.
The result is a finish that feels connected to the architecture rather than sitting flat on top of it.
