Three painters can look at one room and write three different proposals. The first thing to check is whether each has included the same work.
Put these details beside each other.
- Surfaces: walls, ceilings, doors, trim, closets, and built-ins.
- Preparation: repairs, cleaning, sanding, caulking, and priming.
- Materials: product, finish, and any special coating requirements.
- Application: the proposed coats and how coverage issues are handled.
- Logistics: protection, furniture, access, cleanup, and schedule.
- Terms: payment, changes to the work, and the written warranty.
Ask about the gaps.
If one proposal includes a damaged ceiling and another doesn’t mention it, ask for clarification before deciding. A short conversation may explain a large difference.
For decorative work, compare the sample process as well. “Venetian plaster” is a broad description. Color, movement, sheen, surface preparation, and the selected system need a shared understanding.
The price is still part of the decision.
You don’t need to dismiss your budget to value careful work. Once the scope is clear, decide which proposal fits your priorities and gives you confidence in the person doing it.
A clear estimate leaves fewer assumptions for the jobsite. That helps both the homeowner and the painter.
