Whether you’re hiring a specialist or someone you have worked with before, ask about the actual project. The quality of the conversation can tell you a lot.
1. Have you done work like this?
Ask for relevant examples. A cabinet finish, repaired plaster ceiling, and limewashed wall are different assignments.
2. What preparation is included?
Get the proposed repairs, cleaning, sanding, and priming into the scope. “Prep as needed” may mean different things to different people.
3. Which products, and why?
The answer should relate to your surface and how the room is used. For a specialty finish, ask how the sample and final appearance will be agreed.
4. How will you protect the space?
Discuss floors, furniture, dust control, daily cleanup, and access to the work area.
5. Can you provide proof of insurance?
If your building has specific requirements, share them before the work is scheduled.
6. Who will I talk to?
Know your point of contact, the expected schedule, and how updates will be handled.
7. What happens if something changes?
Ask how additional repairs or changes to the scope are discussed and approved. Read the written warranty and payment terms before committing.
These questions are more useful than judging by a job title, a polished truck, or the lowest number. Look for work you can inspect and answers you can understand.
